The Newsmaker

Local news microcoverage is in my blood. The Mountaineer, the tri-weekly in Waynesville, ran write-ups on me for doing nothing more than having a birthday.

The Mountaineer would take almost any community news that was mailed in or dropped off at the office on Main Street. My mother regularly wrote press releases about the birthday parties she gave for my brother Steve and me. Her friends did the same.

This one was posted for my third birthday. Mom got a little fancy when she observed that “Pastel colors were used in the party appointments and the guests were presented with favors.” Not much editing.

Then all the guests were named. Looking back, that seems a little cruel to the children who were considered themselves my friends but weren’t invited. Sorry, kids. Hope you’re not holding a grudge against me.
